How to manage PMS
Posted by bella on 6. 7. 2024 at 21:57I’ve been having a really tough time with PMS symptoms lately. For those who might be unfamiliar it is pre-menstrual syndrome. The mood swings, cramps, and bloating are making it hard to get through the day. I’ve heard that birth control can help, but I’d prefer to manage these symptoms without using hormonal contraceptives for personal reasons.
More concrete symptoms include:
Higher irritability than usual
Feeling of insecurity, lack of confidence
Painful and very tender breasts and bloated stomach
Fatigue and tiredness
Loss of libido
Does anyone have tips or natural remedies that have worked for them to alleviate PMS symptoms? Any advice on lifestyle changes, diet, or supplements would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Reading your symptoms, I think you should find some new gynecologist (preferably a woman) who will have a deeper look at you. Those symptoms look a lot like PMDD (pre menstrual dymorphia dysorder). Dont worry, it’s not something bad, just a different kind of PMS that can be treated, just a little differently. Maybe it is not, so please dont be allarmed, I just wanted you to know that something like this exists and maybe try to find out.

I prefer not to use birth control because of some past experiences with side effects and a desire to keep things as natural as possible. I appreciate the suggestion, though. Also I have been reading some interesting things on why not use it, for example from Dr. Sara Gottfried. She is an OB-GYN that tries to inform people about these things.

I’ve had similar issues, and one thing that’s really helped me is incorporating more magnesium and calcium into my diet. I take supplements, but you can also find these in foods like leafy greens, nuts, and dairy. Regular exercise, even just a daily walk, has also made a big difference in managing my cramps and mood swings. I know that during the peak days of PMS it is hard to move or get to do anything somethimes, but try it for a few mminutes and hopefully that will show if its the right way to go.
