Breastfeeding with support of supply line

A supply line, in the context of breastfeeding, is a fine tube used to deliver expressed breast milk or infant formula. This tube is securely affixed to the mother’s breast in such a way that its end remains close to the nipple during breastfeeding. As the baby sucks at the breast, the supply line facilitates the passage of additional milk from a small container worn around the mother’s neck via a cord.

The use of a supply line during breastfeeding offers several advantages. Babies fed with a supply line tend to receive more milk and are more likely to breastfeed for extended periods. This additional sucking can be beneficial in stimulating increased breast milk production. Moreover, it can help babies who have become accustomed to bottle feeding transition back to breastfeeding directly from the breast.

While frequent breastfeeding is typically the most effective way to stimulate milk production, using a supply line can help enhance milk supply. The duration of supply line use can vary, depending on the specific circumstances and the baby’s feeding needs. It’s essential to conduct a thorough breastfeeding assessment with a lactation consultant to determine if a supply line is a suitable solution.

When preparing for the breastfeeding, wash your hands thoroughly before preparing the supply line. Facilitate your baby’s connection to your breast by introducing one end of the tubing into the corner of your baby’s mouth, angling it slightly towards the roof of their mouth. Alternatively, the tubing can be effectively positioned beneath your nipple, ensuring it directly aligns with your baby’s tongue. The tubing should extend just beyond your baby’s gums. Your baby will simultaneously suck on your breast and the tubing, drawing additional milk through the tubing into their mouth, akin to sipping through a straw. Initially, keep the milk container at the same level as your nipple. Should you need to regulate the flow rate, you can do so by adjusting the bottle’s height.

There are various types of supply line feeding devices available. These devices can be found in pharmacies and shops with medical devices.
